CHEAP EATS

KAIMUKI (KHNL) - When you talk about fish it's gotta be fresh. And you won't find more freshness or more variety than at this week's stop on Cheap Eats. Russ and Lyle pay a visit to Fresh Catch in Kaimuki. Step inside and you'll see about two dozen kinds of poke behind the glass.

"We have some traditional pokes. We got like lomi oio which is hard to find nowadays. Inside here we got aki which is a raw liver. That's another hard one to find. We use limu lepua, limu kohu, waiwaiole and ogo" said owner Reno Henriques. Poke is only the beginning at Fresh Catch.  "Today we're making our Wednesday special. The crab stuffed ahi roll."  Real crab and
ahi are wrapped in nori. Then it's rolled in flour, eggwash, panko, another dip in eggwash then...
"Back into the panko one more time. Ha, ha. Nice and fat and juicy now, eh?"  "I love that fat and juicy part" said Lyle.

It all gets deep fried for a couple of minutes. And there you have it. The crab stuffed ahi roll as only Fresh Catch can do it.   Russ and Lyle ask a couple of diners what they think of their lunch.

"Oh, was ono, ono. I ordered the furikake salmon. Was winners" said Ethan Murao of Waipahu. "The fried poke plate. It's really good. On a scale of one to ten I give it a ten. It's good for lunch. Get plenty, plenty flavors inside too. And it's fish so it's all good" said Jordan Barlan of Ewa Beach.

Poke prices start at about ten bucks a pound. Plate lunches begin at around eight bucks.  Gus Hannemann of Hawaii Kai says he's eating with a purpose: Lyle sampled the furikake ahi. Double dipped, it's big, it's thick and ready to eat. He also tries out the ahi belly. Russ checked out one of the daily specials, the teri furikake salmon. Light and flaky, you cannot beat it. And if fish is not your bag, Fresh Catch has got you covered there as well; the chopped steak plate ends up right in front of Russ.

For fresh poke and a whole lot more, it's Fresh Catch in Kaimuki.
